China Agriculture University (CAU) is located in Beijing, China. NMSU and CAU has a joint Water Science and Engineering research center. In 2015, the first joint conference on "water and food security under changing environments" was organized at CAU, Beijing, China from June 1-7, 2017. About 15 International Experts from New Zealand, United States, Germany, United Kingdom, some countries in South America were invited by CAU through Project (111-Plan). From NMSU, Dr. Samani and Dr. Shukla were invited to participate. All participants visited Shiyanghe experimental station, Qingtu Lake, drip irrigated Hongshaliang area of Minqin County, Laohukou desertification prevention and control demonstration area, and Hongyashan reservoir.

CAU Faculty visited NMSU campus from July 20 to July 25, 2015. The second joint conference on "Water in Agriculture, Natural Science and Engineering" was organized at NMSU Campus on July 21 and 22, 2015. Four faculty from CAU and 14 from NMSU gave oral presentations. A wide ranging discussions were held on initiating a duel degree program

In 2016, NMSU delegation consisting of five faculty members, Drs. Fernald, Samani, Ghimire, Brewer, and Shukla visited CAU and a third joint conference was organized at CAU, Beijing, China. Group also visited Shiyanghe and Shandong Experimental Station. The group also gave talks to the graduate students of CAU as part of the summer school. In 2017, Dr. Sam Fernand visited CAU and hold wide range of discussions. In 2018, Dr. Shukla was invited to visit CAU to serve as one of the five international experts to assess their flagship program in Agricultural Engineering program. Dr. Shukla gave two talks to faculty and graduate students and discussed research with graduate students. Dr. Shukla also taught a non-credit course on "Soil Water and Salinity Management" at the Shiyanghe Experimental Station of CAU that was attended by about 20 students. Rod McSherry, Paul Tian, and Manoj Shukla also met with Vice-President Internal Office of CAU.

Several graduate students supported through China Scholarship Council are currently in NMSU. A graduate student and visiting scholar "Ms. Yaqiong Fan" worked with Dr. Ghimire in spring 2017 in Clovis, New Mexico. "Ms. Xiaojie Li" worked with Dr. Fernald in ANRS in 2017-18. Ms Hui Yang and Mr. Xingwang Wang, graduate students from CAU are working with Dr. Shukla in the PES department during 2017-19.

During the past two years, some progress has been made on conducting joint research, advising graduate students currently at CAU, and writing joint publications.
